This video remembers the two Christmas villages that appeared on the marquee of the G. Fox & Company department store in Hartford, Connecticut. The first village was created in 1959 and the second in 1967. Original 8mm movie of the Christmas village from 1960: https://youtu.be/B9W3Nr5UZHE

Almost makes you want to cry–not only are locally-owned businesses passe, so is the idea of walking through the downtown shopping district–killed by malls with cookie-cutter stores that are themselves dying.

I remember the old days: shopping at G.Fox and Sage Allen. My mother used to take me as a young child to the 11th or 12th floor of G. Fox every year which at that time was the toy floor. The entire ceiling was a mesmerizing display of overhead netting with hanging glass bulbs and ornaments during the Christmas holiday season. Sage Allen had a cafeteria back then which was so crowded at lunchtime, you couldn’t get a seat. Fast forward to the 60’s. As a teen I still came to Hartford to see the G. Fox Christmas display. So many good memories are not forgotten.
