The Colonial center-chimney house at 353 Newfield Street in Middletown was built sometime between 1705/6, when Lt. Nathaniel Bacon (1674-1759) inherited the land from his father Nathaniel (an early settler of Middletown in 1653 who was born in England in 1630 and came to America in 1649), and 1759, when the property was mentioned in the younger Nathaniel‘s will.

I assume the roofed front porch was not added until the late 19th century?

Bacon descendants lived in that home until the last decade! At least two other newer Bacon homes are in the immediate vicinity; one of them adjoins this property.

The porch was definitely not there in 1706. You’re probably correct in assuming (latter half of) the 19th century. Then, there’s there the Federal era front doorway. A house that’s been in existence that long has had plenty of opportunity for updates.
