2864-Long-Hill-David-S-Brooks-1790

The house at 2864 Long Hill Road in North Guilford was built in 1790. It was the home of Dr. David S. Brooks. He married Annis Benton (b. 1764). Dr. Brooks delivered “An eulogy on the Death of George Washington,” at Guilford on February 22, 1800. The eulogy was published in New York in 1823. A facsimile of the only known copy of this work was reprinted by the Blackstone Memorial Library in Branford in 1920. Dr. Brooks later moved to New York, where he died in January, 1826. His son, David B. Brooks, graduated from Yale and practiced medicine in Cromwell starting in 1819. He also later moved to New York where he died in 1830.

The Brooks house was owned by my family from the 1800’s till the 1970’s. My Great Grandfather, Henry Mozart Rossiter and his wife, Marion Chedsey, my Great Grandmother, lived there before and after The Civil War. Their son, Frank Rossiter, my Grandfather, married Mabel Dudley, My Grandmother, and ran the farm up until their death about 1945. Their son, my father, Morris Dudley Rossiter and my Mother, Eleanor May Rossiter, took over the farm growing hay and taking care of his Great Aunts and Uncles who live their until their passing. In the 1970’S my father sold the farm to the Clinton family who undertook restoring the house until Carol and Theron Usher bought and totally restored it back to its original 1792 condition. Carol Usher sold the property to a couple from New York in the Spring of 2023.

    Mr Robin Bulkeley Rossiter
