Built c. 1789-1790, the Thomas Sanford House, at 111-113 North Street in Milford, was doubled around 1850 (it’s been called a “double dutch house”). The long front porch was added about 1880.

Thomas Sanford, one of the forty-four pioneer settlers of Milford, CT was my great grandfather (x’s 12). He was granted land thereon 20 Nov 1639. The settlement was laid out in long, narrow lots which permitted all settlers to have the same kind of land. The settlement was protected by a fort-like fence and the scriptures was their constitution. Thomas Sanford willed his home and lands in Milford to his son Samuel Sanford in 1681. The home was improved upon several times over the course of many years. Some of the founding fathers of Milford have been eulogized forever by adorning The Memorial Bridge of Milford, built in 1889, with very large engraved stones placed there to honor them. Thomas and Sarah Sanford’s stone reads, “Thomas Sandford Obit 1681; Sarah His Wife.” There is also a reserved plaque in the First Church of Milford recognizing him to be one of the first planters of Milford. It reads, “In memory of Thomas Sanford-one of the original planters of Milford, Conn, who united with the First Church Jan 9 1642 and Sarah his wife who became a member of this church Dec 15th 1642. My grandfather is listed as the 14th generation in the Thomas Sanford ancestory. I remember seeing the bridge but I don’t remember seeing this house. I thought his land granted to him was now a retail camera store.

Hi Steve, No, the house was at one time suppose to be demolished but is now on the HIstorical Homes register. My great great great grandfather, Ira Sanford, is in the 11th generation lineage of Thomas Sanford. He is descended from Ezekiel and Rose Warner Sanford. Thomas’s known brothers were Robert, Andrew and possibly Zachariah. What is known is Thomas, Andrew and Robert set sail for America about 1631-32 when Thomas was in his early twenties; with their uncle Andrew Warner (the younger brother of their mother, Rose Warner-Sanford). Not sure what became of Robert and Zach; they may have returned to England. The immigrants lived in Dorchester, Massachusetts for a while then eventually made their way to Milford, Connecticut. When in Hartford, CT his brother Andrew and his wife Mary were tried for witchcraft in 1632. Andrew was acquitted but Mary is believed to have been hung. The execution papers for her have vanished; the court records of the trial remain. I thought you may not know of this event. This happened long before the famed witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts. Ironic, this occured since the foundation of this country was based on religious freedom. The puritans, it seems had a hard time with the transition. Even more ironic is the fact that to this day, Connecticut is the only state who has not pardoned those tried and convicted of witchcraft. All other states have. Respectfully, Jamie

I am a descendent of Thomas Sanford. My grandfather Ivan his father Soton. We have a copy of the genealogy books commissioned by John Sanford. Copy right I believe is 1903 give or take a couple years.
