Capt. John Appleman was a Mystic sea captain who commanded the Naptune and the Hero. His Greek Revival home was built in 1837 and is on Gravel Street in Mystic. The original pedimented entryway to the house was destroyed in the Hurricane of 1938. In 1958, the house was purchased by Capt. Edward L. Beach. He commanded the nuclear submarine, USS Triton, in 1960, when it became the first vessel to execute a submerged circumnavigation of the Earth. Capt. Beach was also a bestselling author of the World War II submarine novel, Run Silent Run Deep (1955).

I grew up in the house in the early 70’s. I have the best childhood memories of living here, although my Morher swore it was haunted!

My Dad was in the Navy. We rented this home in 1963 when I was in the third grade. I loved this house so much!

My ancestors the Appelman family, lived in the home in the 19th Century. Most of the Appelman family emigrated West to the states of IA, SD, and WI with some moving to CA eventually. Thanks for the nice write-up and photograph. I also appreciate the link to that old fishing book with references to Capt. John Frederick Appelman.
