Alpheus S. Williams was a Union general in the Civil War. He was born in 1810 in Saybrook (now called Deep River). [see General Alpheus S. Williams (1911), by Joseph Greusel and Memorial Addresses on the Life and Character of Alpheus S. Williams (1880)] In 1817, his father, Ezra Williams, bought the house at the corner of Main and Elm Streets in Deep River. It had been built in 1802 by Jabez Southworth, Sr. The year before, Ezra Williams had partnered with George Read, Phineas Pratt and others to form Ezra Williams & Company to manufacture ivory combs.
Southworth-Williams House (1802)
The Williams house depicted was more likely built circa 1802 by Jabez Southworth, Sr., then sold to Ezra Williams in 1817, according to research by historian Donald Malcarne, who recently passed away. I live in Jabez Southworth, Jr.’s house down the street. I am a board member of the Deep River Historical Society and the chairperson for the House Documentation Program of its Architectural Heritage Committee. Please feel free to contact me regarding this and many more DR homes.
Hello Mark,
I am trying to confirm colonial era STILLMAN family ancestry and descendants in Middlesex county. Jabez Southworth (1837-1923) and Shelley E Southworth (1844-1917) were sons of Ansel D. Southworth + Sarah Emily Stillman.
Do you know where I might find additional information on descendants of these sons and the ancestry of Sarah Emily Stillman?
Thank you,
Harvey Conlkin Hilton
Javez Southworth is my wife’s 4 times Great Grandfather. We would like to learn more about the Southworth family
I am a direct descendant of Ella Louise Southworth/Wilder of Essex. She was my Great-Grandmother. I was never able to meet her. She passed I believe the year before I was born. I have many old photos of Ancestors and would like to put names to faces. Not sure who’s Southworth and who is Wilder. If anyone would be interested in conversing about the Southworth or Wilder family I can be contacted at leelee1062@yahoo.com. Please include Southworth in caps in the title so that I am sure to take notice of it.
