Saint Peter and Saint Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church (1916)

In 1897, Immigrants in Ansonia from what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire established one of the first parishes of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the United States. The first St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was constructed in 1897-1898 on May Street. In 1910, the congregation purchased land at 105 Clifton Avenue, where the current church was built in 1915-1916. Plans for the church were sent by an architect from Lviv, Halychyna and the architectural firm of Johnson and Burns of Hartford was selected to complete the blueprints. The church’s roof is covered in red tiles and the domes are clad in copper. A major restoration of the building took place in 1987-1989.

Sacred Heart Church, New Britain (1904)

Polish immigrants in New Britain first formed a congregation in 1894 as a mission of St. Stanislaus parish in Meriden. The new parish in New Britain was established the following year. Originally named St. Casimir the King, its name was changed in 1896 to the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. The first church was built on Orange Street in 1896. The current church, at 158 Broad Street, was designed by architect George P. B. Alderman of Holyoke. It was built in 1903-1904.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hartford (1917)

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, at Ely and Winthrop Streets in Hartford, was erected by a congregation of German immigrants who first organized in 1872. The church began with a basement chapel, designed by Michael O’Danahue and completed in 1893. The Gothic structure with yellow brick facade was completed by architect George A. Zunner, Sr. and was dedicated in 1917. Today, the church has a primarily Puerto Rican congregation.

St. Justin Catholic Church (1933)

In 1914, Father Francis P. Nolan built a house in the Blue Hills section of Hartford. In 1924, he was named founding pastor of St. Justin Parish. Fr. Nolan, who had a degree from Yale’s Sheffield Scientific School and had worked as a civil engineer, was much involved in planning the new church with architects Whiton & McMahon. Built in 1931-1933, the church is an Art Deco structure and has Art Deco ornamentation in the interior as well. (more…)

St. Bernard Catholic Church, Rockville (1904)

The first Catholic Mass in Rockville (Vernon) was celebrated by fifteen Catholics in a house owned by the Paper Mill Company. St. Bernard’s Parish was established in Rockville in 1854 and the first church was completed in 1856. The church was destroyed by fire in 1904 and the cornerstone for the present church was laid five months later. The new church was dedicated on September 20, 1908. Built on a prominent site on Saint Bernard Terrace, the church was designed by Joseph A. Jackson, who had earlier designed the parish school in 1895.

Washington Park Church, Bridgeport (1883)

The church at the corner of Barnum and Noble avenues (235 Barnum Avenue) in Bridgeport was built in 1883 as the Washington Park Methodist Episcopal Church. The brick Gothic church with elaborate terra cotta trim was designed by Lawrence B. Valk of New York. Organized in 1853, Park Church was the first church in East Bridgeport. Today, the building is Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church. This parish was founded in 1950 and, the following year, acquired a church building and rectory on Grant Street. An adjoining building was purchased in 1958 to become the parish school, but in 1966, the parish was notified by the state that their property was required for the building of a hospital. In 1970, therefore, the parishioners voted to purchase the former Methodist church on Barnum Avenue to become their new home.
