Somers Inn

The Somers Inn, 585 Main Street in Somers, originally opened in 1804 as the Kibbe Hotel (some sources indicate 1768, which may have been an earlier building on the site). It was run by Warren Kibbe and then by George Kibbe. The building started as a Federal-style structure with a hip roof, but it was remodeled around 1860 as a Greek Revival building. In 1931 it became Ye Olde Homestead Inn, run by Alphonse and Hilda Joerg and George and Emily Schiessl. In the early 1960s was renamed The Somers Inn. The historic property, which has not offered lodgings in many years, has been a popular restaurant. It was recently sold and reopened in April as the Copper House Tavern.

I wonder how the latest modifications to turn The Somers Inn into the Copper House Tavern were permitted by the Historical Society of Somers, not to mention the building inspector. The building is in obvious need of repair, but the new owners completely ruined it. Instead of restoring the property they covered over the front in cheap sheets of some kind of grey brick panels, which are already coming off and gaps simply covered with grey paint. It is hideous and no repairs that are sorely needed were made.

This building, regardless of what name is used or its purpose, sits right in the center of town at the intersection of Route 190 and Route 83. Nobody can go through the town without seeing it.

What was the town thinking to allow such an historical building to be bastardized as it was. Disgraceful.

I was saddened to see the Somers Inn closed. Copper House is a chain and it looks like they didn’t take care to preserve the building. I hope it’s not run like the one near my office in Waltham, MA. That one is overrun with mice.
