The Norwich Savings Society, the second oldest savings bank in Connecticut, was founded in 1824. The Norwich Savings Society building, at 162-4 Main Street, in downtown Norwich, was built between 1893 and 1895, with an addition being constructed in the 1970s. The building was designed to curve around one side of an intersection, joining seamlessly with the buildings on either side (although the building on the Broadway side has since been demolished). The Chateauesque-style Norwich Savings Society building now houses a People’s United Bank.

Thank you for making this photo available. My mother worked in this bank for many years…I hold a story of her experience there in my heart. It was a defining moment in her life… and has remained a beacon throughout mine. One that still has bearing on Women’s lives today! When did People’s United take over? Is the building on the National Register? Thank you again.
This was the first bank I ever visited. It has been my ideal of what a bank should look like through out my life. It is a true landmark
for the city of Norwich.
“Norwich a College Town?” A major school like the University of Connecticut could establish a satellite campus in the Norwich downtown district. This plan would encourage high tech and other companies to move to Norwich. Think about it.
We are moving into the first floor and are renovating into our church (www.castle.church). We’d love to connect with anyone who has old photos of the interior. Or any other tidbits of history.
i have a wood bank\barrel from norwich savings society, i picked it up at a yard sale for a quarter but it has no key. i was wondering if anyone might know the maker or any former employee of the savings society might have any info
Were there ever any Norwich Savings Society located anywhere near Stonington CT or Westerly , RI?
I am looking for the deed to my late parents property.
Thank you,
