North of Morgan Street, where I-84 passes under Main Street in Hartford, Connecticut, once stood Rev. Horace Bushnell’s North Congregational Church. It was later Germania Hall and then Herrup’s Furniture store, which burned down in 1932. North of it on Village Street was the Silver Brothers Building. South of Morgan Street, there’s now a parking lot that was once the location of the the Cadden Building (Demolished 1920), the First Baptist Church (demolished 1927), and the 7-story Pilgard Building (demolished in 1965).

Dan,
Thank you again for your continued efforts to present the Historic Buildings of Connecticut, and in particular Hartford. As I might have mentioned previously, my grandparents lived in 33 1/2 Morgan St. It was about across for the Morgan Street alley that led to G.Fox &Co.. This building (33 1/2) was down an alley and set back from Morgan. Before it going up Morgan St. Hill was a bar (?) Beyond the bar going up the hill was Tenino’s (or Denino’s) parking lot that was on the corner of Windsor and Morgan. A few doors down on Windsor St (or Village) was the State Theatre). And of course the D&D Market was at the split where Windsor St met Village St.
From my grandparents porch if you looked across the parking lot to the East you saw the State Theatre building. Abutting the parking lot was The Settlement House. The Settlement House had a small playground with a slide and Monkey bars.
33 1/2 tenants were mostly immigrants from Italy. As I remember, some of the family names there were Pressamarita, Gangi, Neglia, Rinaldi, Bremonti, Petrella,
Most of the tenants moved to the South End and lived in and around Franklin Avenue after 33 1/2
Morgan St was leveled for I-84.
