Formerly the schoolhouse of Wethersfield‘s West Hill District, the one-room school called the “Little Red Schoolhouse” was built in 1869 and still displays its two separate front entrances, one for boys and one for girls. The building was later used by the Wethersfield Police Department and is now home to the Wethersfield Art League.

I’m was looking for pictures of Old Schoolhouses in Connecticut and I came upon your picture. I was wondering if I could have your permission to reprint. I work for a nonprofit association representing boards of education in Connecticut. I would be more than willing to give you credit for the picture.

What fond memories I still have of this Little Red School. I attended first grade there 54-55. We lived on Wells Rd and walking to that school (and later Emerson-Williams) was a great part of the day. I felt safe in that one-room world that grew larger as the class grew & learned together. That unique experience never left me. I look back with amazement at Mrs. Davis’ skills at handling everything for that class, all day, everyday. This came to mind particularly when teaching school in rural Appalachia. I’m grateful for the perspective it gave. Who knew that one year spent in that little school would be so meaningful. A simple treasure. Thank you, Wethersfield.

What fond memories I have of my first grade year, 1954-55, at The Little Red Schoolhouse. We lived on Church Street, but there were too many students to all attend Charles Wright so for one year The Little Red Schoolhouse was our classroom. Mrs Davis was our teacher.
I recall the sandbox in the room, the large trees behind the building providing cool shade during recess. I especially recall when the words “under God” were added to The Pledge of Allegiance in June,1954. Mrs. Davis had us all go outside to make a circle around the flagpole at the entrance to say the Pledge of Allegiance on that day.
I was so fortunate to be able to be in that little school for my first grade year.-a treasured memory of a special time.
