Chloe Munger House, Guilford

The house at 35 Sate Street in Guilford was built in 1828 on land given by Miles Munger to his unmarried sister Chloe Munger. After her death in 1842, it was occupied by the Mungers’ daughter Emmeline and her husband, Franklin Phelps, who served as Guilford’s postmaster (1856-1861 and 1865-1869). For a time, the house housed the Visiting Nurse Association. It has a wing added in 2002.

    Hi there,

I just realized that this house originally belonged to my Mother’s ancestors!

Chloe and her brothers & sisters were actually my 3 older sisters and my 3rd cousins, 6x’s removed. My 9th Great-Grandfather was Nicholas Munger; and he was the 1st Munger to come over to America on The St. John, in 1639, under the supervision of Major William Chittenden, as his “indentured servant”; and, that he was younger than age 21. The Munger Book states that Nicholas Munger took the Oath of Fidelity in September, 1652. And, if I am not mistaken, the park in Guilford is named after Major William Chittenden? Is this true? If so, it is incredibly fascinating to me! Nicholas Munger’s 2 son’s names were John and Samuel Munger; and his wife’s name was Sarah (HALL) Munger. She married a Mr. Dennis Crampton, a short time after Nicholas passed away in October, 1668.

My sisters and I were born and raised in south-central Wisconsin; and live in the same city, now. I had been away from the area for almost
9 years, while working with/teaching elementary through middle school students, just to the NW of Houston, Texas, prior to July, 2004, when my parents were aging, & my Mom was diagnosed with an awful lung disease called Pulmonary Fibrosis, earlier that spring; thus, my decision to return from Houston, Texas, to assist them.

I truly would love to come to visit Guilford; but, that is not a possibility at this point in time. However, the more ancestry research that I do, continues to bring me to what appears to be your “sweet city” of Guilford, Connecticut!
