Seven years after the Congregationalists built a church in the expanding Asylum Hill neighborhood of Hartford, the Baptists constructed a Gothic Revival-style sanctuary facing Sigourney Street. Designed by the architect George Keller, this small 1872 structure (which later burned) was joined in 1896 by the main section of the present Asylum Avenue Baptist Church, designed by Hapgood & Hapgood.

I attended Asylum Avenue Baptist Church during the 1960s and was a member of Baptist Youth Fellowship ( BYF ). In the basement of the church was a single-alley bowling alley which provided hours of fun for the neighborhood teens.

My family lived in Newington (1947 to 1955) and sometimes were able to
Attend the Asylum Ave church. My Aunt & Uncle, The Mains were members.
I too remember the unique bowling alley. Wonder if its still there?
