Bacon’s Hotel, started in the 1830s, was an early hotel on Bank Street in New London From the 1840s to 1874, the hotel was run by William Bacon and his brother John. It was expanded from two to three floors and renamed the Bacon House around 1880. After the building burned down in 1897, it was replaced in 1898 by the Gavitt Building, 57 Bank Street, with the upper floors containing the Royal Hotel.

This was my grandfather’s (Frederick H. Gavitt) hotel/building. I have a picture of the Bacon’s Hotel prior to 1897. I also have pictures of the inside of the Hotel Royal circa 1900 during the time my grandfather was the proprietor.

    Dear Mr. Gavitt Swanson,
My name is David Aponte and I am contacting you because I am starting a new business in the lower part of your grandfather’s building on bank street. I am retiring from the US Navy and interested in starting a Bar/Restaurant that not only serves spirits to the local community but one that is family oriented has well. I am looking put in pictures that create a time line of different era’s leading to present time. I thought it would be a great way to inform patrons of the great history of new London, this would be a great conversational piece for the patrons visiting my establishment. If there is anyway that we could meet or I could see any of the pictures you may have that would help me would be great. If you are interested I would also like for you to join us at our grand opening if possible.
